Jack Oneill’s Guide for New Citizens

Greetings Citizen, rookie or space cadet! So you took the first step. Saw some great videos, read some good information or perhaps heard from others what an amazing game Star Citizen is and created your free account. Nothing like reserving your character to build a name for yourself in the Verse…whatever your interest may be. But where do you go from here?
This guide will hopefully guide you through some of the key areas and aspects of Star Citizen, the RSI site and more.

First Step
Now that you have your free account, you’ll likely want to find a ship (or ships…don’t worry, the ‘citizenitis’ bites many of us) that fit the play style and interest that you personally have. Start by checking out the lineup of ships out there: “Star Citizen>Ship Specs” (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/ship-specs). Here you can browse a wide variety of ships that have been released to date. (Note: Stats can and will change. This game is in development. The sooner you can understand and accept that…the happier you’ll be…even if you lose your neutron cannons or any other item you “thought” you may have once had.)
After you have a rough idea of what interests you, check out the various commercials for some of these various ships on the RSI/Star Citizen You Tube site. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTeLqJq1mXUX5WWoNXLmOIA) Specifically within the ‘Commercial’ section (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVct2QDhDrB0QRjv9oN02f8mGsml8tcK9) You can also search your ship name in Google or You Tube for plenty of other pictures, videos, information, opinions of praise and complaint, and so much more.

Once you’ve decided on your ship package, make your way over to the RSI store: Store>Pledge and click on ‘View All’ (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/game-packages) From here, you can pick up the ship package that you would like.

Running Squirrels: LTI (Life Time Insurance). So, you may as well hear about it now, just so it doesn’t take your breath away later…like when you’re standing on a planet and see Vanduul coming to harvest the planet around you and wonder what signs you missed to get out in time. Some very early ships had LTI on the hull insurance. For backing early, you had insurance coverage on that hull, knowing that you won’t have payments to maintain that hull insurance. CIG, Chris, and many others have clearly stated many times that the LTI is smaller in amount, and is also a reason for the funds that accompany many ships. No, you won’t have to grind weeks on end just to make that payment for hull insurance….so if you happen to be twenty seconds out of your hangar on your maiden voyage and crash into an asteroid, you’re insured. Certain new concept ships (when first released) may have LTI on the ship. If you really want to know more details about LTI, you can watch the following video which sums it all up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af1OxkFOK18

To actually make your payment, just ADD to Cart and checkout making a one time payment with a credit card, PayPal, or preferred method available. Just keep in mind, even though many who have been around a while may laugh and quote the phrase “I may be poor in life but at least I’ll be rich in Star Citizen”…still does not put food on your table for yourself, wife, and/or children. Add to Cart responsibly.

Running Squirrels: Aside from buying your own ship, there are also various contests from kind Citizens and orgs out there to win free ships…you’ll just have to do your own searches within the forums for these ‘Community>Forums’ (https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com) Contest guidelines are outlined here: https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/86002/forum-rules-moderator-responsibilities-updated-11-26-14#latest for those interested. May the luck of the traveling pilgrim be with you! Many will enter…few will win (I’m still hoping to win one eventually!...that or a mystery gifter…Citizen).

Out of the e-mail, into the Hangar
Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of an e-mail in your inbox and a ship package for Star Citizen…boldly going where countless others have gone before you! Now it’s time to download the installer. ‘Star Citizen>Download’ (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/download) will get you where you need to be. Currently, a 31 MB installer and 20.6 GB patch. No…most likely you won’t get this downloaded while having a pizza and Dr. Pepper. Put this one on auto-pilot and sleep on it…dreams of flying your new ship, multi-crews getting thrown around the back of your ship, and hoping that rookie pilot can land you and all your friends safely planetside without everyone ending up with a mechanical leg or arm.
Now that you have the game installed and perhaps explored a bit, time to select your desired features. Select ‘My RSI>My Hangar’ (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/account/pledges). Right at the top you’ll see ‘Hangar’ and the little tool configuration (https://robertsspaceindustries.com/account/pledges/configuration)

Depending on the type of ship(s) you ultimately ended up purchasing, you may have a few hangars here to explore. Select the one that you’d like to see as your hangar. (Currently: Selfland Hangar, Aeroview Hangar, Revel & York Hangar, and VFG Industrial Hangar).
Under ‘My Hangar Configuration’ you can select exactly what ship(s) you see in specified hangar bay areas. Currently, you can also leave this blank and still see your ships in hangar…but if you have two ships and type A personality, needing that Avenger sitting to the right side of that Constellation…well, here you can do it. Be sure to ‘save’ your chosen selections.
