So I've been flying around in SC for a few days now. However, my question is about the hanger, not the flight. There is this console, that when I use, dims the lights and displays some sort of holo-panel. It says Ships, weapons etc. However, I cannot figure out for the life of me how to interact with the device beyond just shutting it off.

So I come to you, almighty forums. What does my mystery box do, and how do I effectively use it?
