Howdy! Staffen here,

I've got an aging, run-of-the-mill machine at the moment; x64 Windows 7 Professional, i7-3770 @ 3.40 GHz with 16GB RAM & a GTX 770. It runs Arena Commander in its current state just fine at moderate graphics settings. While I'm not quite satisfied with its performance overall, I already have plans in motion for replacing it later with a comically expensive (and demonstrably superior) build to meet whatever the trend of visual decadence is in 1-2 years.

But that's the not the reason I'm calling this morning.

I've been wanting to start recording gameplay footage for a while now. The idea of archiving and sharing memorable moments has appealed to me for a long time now. However, doing so with my current specs obviously means sacrificing a lot of performance power. What's more, in the future I don't really want to have, say, FRAPS potentially causing hiccups during gameplay either -- as it is wont to currently do. I'm therefore contemplating just slapping together a secondary machine purely for recording using a capture card. I would likely just copy video files back over to my main machine in order to do the editing.

So: Does anyone here have any experience running dedicated machines for separate audio-visual capture? Would you mind sharing a little wisdom with me, if so? This would be a recording-only machine -- I wouldn't even bother to set up internet access on it; no need to even remotely worry about streaming since download/upload options here in sub-urban/sub-rural Midwestern United States are abysmal.

In particular I am curious as to whether or not this is feasible for just under $1,000. I just recently finished assembling a series of radio-studio production machines at work per the specifications of the chief engineer, and they have been performing admirably. I am currently thinking of emulating that setup for this. I even have a few pristine sample parts from work that aren't needed for spares -- I can easily reuse them.

Just fishing for thoughts on the matter, so don't worry --- RSI forums happened to be the first thing that came to mind when I considered asking for advice on it. If I manage to reach a solid conclusion out of this thread, though, I definitely wouldn't be complaining.
